John 8:12 says;
“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world (τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου, to fos tou kosmou). Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Matthew Henry’s commentary on this verse is as below.
“Christ is the Light of the world. God is light, and Christ is the image of the invisible God. One sun enlightens the whole world; so does one Christ and there needs no more. What a dark dungeon would the world be without the sun! So would it be without Jesus, by whom light came into the world. Those who follow Christ shall not walk in darkness. They shall not be left without the truths which are necessary to keep them from destroying error, and the directions in the way of duty, necessary to keep them from condemning sin.”
Lord Jesus further said to us in Matthew 5:14;
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Wait a minute Lord. Did You say we Christians are the light of the world?
How can we be? We are not either perfect as You, nor holy like You. Wait Lord, I think I can know what You meant by that… Isn’t it meant by that we Christians are small light bearers of Your Great Light? Just like the moon reflects the Sun light back to us in a night sky? Isn’t it the reason why You describes the Church on earth as "clothed with the Sun, with the moon on her feet?"
“A great and wondrous sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.” (Revelation 12:1)
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Lord, please make us shine forth Your Light onto the world whose mind was darkened. Let us be the witness of Your Gospel of the Glory in this dark world.
Let this writing of Thy unworthy servant be a small light of the Gospel of the Glory of Christ. Amen and amen!
