oday’s question is: “Why did Jesus call the hypocrites, “Brood of vipers”?”
The simple answer is:
“The scribes and Pharisees were enemies to the gospel of Christ, and therefore to the salvation of the souls of men.”
We read in, Matthew 23:29 & 33
“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous… You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?”
You snakes - This name is given to them on account of their pretending to be pious, and very much devoted to God, but being secretly evil, at the heart, with all their pretensions, they were filled with evil designs, as the serpent was in the Garden of Eden.
We are really, what we are inwardly. Outward motives may keep the outside clean, while the inside is filthy; but if the heart and spirit be made new, there will be newness of life; here we must begin with ourselves.
We read in, Jeremiah 17:10;
“I the LORD search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve.”
Lord Jesus, search us and discover the deceitfulness of the heart; let us be the same inwardly and outwardly in Your sight. Amen.
