Lake of Fire - II

When I saw this breathtaking photo of one of the most active and spectacular volcanoes of the world on the Island of Tanna in the South Pacific, it reminded me of the Word of God telling us of the existence of the lake of fire.

We read in, Revelation 20:14

“Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.

And death and hades were cast into the lake of fire - Death and Hades (hell) are here personified, as they are in the previous verse. The declaration is equivalent to the statement in 1 Corinthians 15:26; “The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.”

The idea is, that death, considered as the separation of soul and body will exist no more. The righteous will live forever, and the wicked will linger on in a state never to be terminated by death. The reign of Death and Hades would come to an end, and a new order of things would commence.

Revelation 1:18

I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”

I am He Who lives (καὶ ὁ ζῶν); and l was dead (καὶ ἐγενόμην νεκρὸς) Here is another peculiar title of God.

He was dead; He died the death of the cross, for the sins of His people, in due time, and but once; and it was but a short time He was held under the power of death, and will never die any more.

And behold I am alive for evermore, Amen; He was always alive as God, or He was always the Living God, and ever will be; and He is now alive as man, and will forever continue so; and He is alive to God, He lives by Him, with Him, and to His glory; and He is alive to the benefit and advantage of His redeemed ones, for whom He died; He ever lives to make intercession for them; He rose again from the dead for their justification.

And I have the keys of death and of hades - That is, the invisible world. In the intermediate state, the body abides in death, the soul in hades. Christ hath the keys of, that is, the power over, both; killing or quickening of the body, and disposing of the soul, as it pleases Him. He gave Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven; but not the keys of death and hades.
