Baby Martyrs

The Massacre of the Innocents is the biblical narrative of infanticide and gendercide by Herod the Great, the Roman appointed King of the Jews.

According to the Gospel of Matthew Herod ordered the execution of all young male children in the village of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth had been announced to him by the Magi from the east.

We read in, Matthew 2:16-17;

“When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled.”

The number of infants killed is not stated, but estimates of the number of infants at the time in Bethlehem, a town with a total population of about 1000, would be about twenty. [However these innocent babies have been claimed as the first Christian martyrs.

Where will these killed babies be now?

We read in, Revelation 20:4;

I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”

 The reason why I believe those massacred children are in Heaven is that they were murdered because of the Word of God saying, “Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled;

We read in, Jeremiah 31:15

This is what the Lord says:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,
mourning and great weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”

If they were Rachel’s children (Israelites) who fulfilled the Word of Jehovah God, aren’t they the souls who died because of their testimony of Jesus and the Word of God? There are enough reasons we can believe they are among the Christian martyrs crying loud under the altar. Didn’t Jesus Himself come and die on the cross to fulfill the Word of God?

We read in, Revelation 6:8-9;

 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the Word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?”

Matthew 18:3

“I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”

In connection with this verse, Isaiah tells us, speaking of the New Earth, that there are children there who lead the wild animals and children who play on the hole of a venomous serpent.  So there are children in the resurrection who obviously must have died while they were children.

We read in, Isaiah 11:8-9;

“The infant will play near the hole of the cobra,

and the young child put his hand into the viper’s nest.

They will neither harm nor destroy

on all my holy mountain.”

Why did God allow Herod to do that atrocity to the babies i.e. why does God allow innocent people like these babies in Bethlehem?  Not just Herod, but what about some of the despots and dictators who have slain millions through time, and lots of innocent people have died - even in our generation in many parts of the world for example, the massacre of the Jews under Nazi.

Honestly, I don’t know. Instead of asking this question, we need to thank God by asking;

Why is God so merciful that He preserves and saves so many like us, even though we deserve death in our sin?
