200 Million Troops

Revelation 9:1-21NIV

The Trumpets – Fifth to Sixth

1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss.

3 And out of the smoke locusts came down upon the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth.

4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were not given power to kill them, but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6 During those days men will seek death, but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.

7 The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle. On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces. 8 Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth. 9 They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle. 10 They had tails and stings like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.

11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that is before God.

14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”

15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind.

16 The number of the mounted troops was two hundred million. I heard their number.

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulfur.

18 A third of mankind was killed by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur that came out of their mouths.

19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.

21 Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.

Verse 11

Abbadon vs. Appollyon

Ἀβαδδών, אֲבַדּון, Abaddon, Destroyer (i.e. Destroying Angel) or place of destruction (personified).

Ἀπολλύων Apollýōn (from apóllymi, “cause to perish, be ruined”) – properly, “the destroyer” (from the Abyss)

The name of this angelic leader is ‘Abaddon’ (Hebrew, Destruction) and ‘Apollyon’ (Greek, Destroyer). There is no biblical basis for assigning this angelic being the same identification as Satan as some commentators attempt to do. The Hebrew term ‘Abaddon’ is used to refer to the realm of the dead (Proverbs 15:11; Job 26:6; Psalm 88:11). It is also the place of destruction.

This is the only place in Scripture that a particular angel is explicitly identified by the name Destruction or Destroyer, but we discern his presence in Scripture.

1 Corinthians 10:8-10 states, “Nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; nor murmur, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed (by the destroyer.) (italics added)

The murmuring event Paul is referencing occurs in Numbers 14 in connection with the report of the twelve spies. The death of the ten “unbelievers” is credited to “the destroyer.” Hebrews 11:28 also reports that “the destroyer” (Masculine participle) was responsible for the death of the first born in Egypt just prior to the Exodus (Ex 12:23). As in Numbers 14, where the plague led by the destroyer accomplished God’s punishment of the wicked so in Revelation 9 the locusts plague led by the destroyer will accomplish God’s punishment of the wicked in the same context.

Verses 13-19

What are the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates and had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind?

They (four angels) seemed to me that the four nations in the world which have great interests in the Middle East region (at the great river Euphrates) maintaining the power balance (bound and had been kept) until the time when (for this very hour and day and month and year) they were released to kill a third of mankind by going into war for hegemony.

The expression, “out of their mouths came fire, smoke and sulfurin this passage reminds us of the ‘artillery’ or ‘bombing’ as a mode of modern war.

Verse 16: “The number of the mounted troops was two hundred million. I heard their number”.

Two hundred thousand thousand - Δυο μυριαδες μυριαδων· duo muriades muriadōn. The myriad was ten thousand. Two myriads of myriads (2 x 10,000 x 10,000); that is, two hundred millions(200,000,000); an army that was never yet got together from the foundation of the world.

What countries on earth can deploy two hundred million troops combined for a war? I think these four angels (countries) can be US-EU, RUSSIA, CHINA and  INDIA. They take up nearly 50% of world population, which is estimated to be 7 billion currently.

Verse 21

Magic arts

Φάρμακος  phármakos – properly, a sorcerer; used of people using drugs and “religious incantations” to drug people into living by their illusions – like having magical (supernatural) powers to manipulate God into giving them more temporal possessions. It is from φάρμακον pharmakon (a drug).

English word ‘pharmacy’, ‘Pharmacist’ have their origin from this word.

We need to be cautious at this point and should not read modern history back into Scripture, but it may be possible to see wide spread drug abuse during this period. Particularly, given the wide- spread unveiled manifestations of Satan and demons during the same period. Magic in the traditional sense would be passé, i.e. out of date.
