Zechariah 6:1-15 NIV

Four Chariots

1I looked up again, and there before me were four chariots coming out from between two mountains—mountains of bronze. 2The first chariot had red horses, the second black, 3the third white, and the fourth dappled—all of them powerful. 4I asked the angel who was speaking to me, “What are these, my lord?”

5The angel answered me,

These are the four spirits of heaven, going out from

standing in the Presence of The LORD of the whole

6The one with the black horses is going toward the north country, the one with the white horses toward the west,b and the one with the dappled horses toward the south.”

7When the powerful horses went out, they were straining to go throughout the earth. And he said,

“Go throughout the earth!” So they went throughout the earth.

8Then he called to me,

“Look, those going toward the north country have given MY SPIRIT rest in the land of the north.”

A Crown for Joshua

9The WORD of The LORD Came to me:

10“Take silver and gold from the exiles Heldai, Tobijah and Jedaiah, who have arrived from Babylon. Go the same day to the house of Josiah son of Zephaniah. 11Take the silver and gold and make a crown, and set it on the head of the high priest, Joshua son of Jozadak.d

12Tell him This Is What The LORD ALMIGHTY Says:

‘Here Is The Man WHOSE Name Is The Branch, and HE Will Branch Out from HIS place and Build The Temple of The LORD.

13 It Is HE WHO Will Build The Temple of The LORD, and HE Will Be Clothed with Majesty and Will Sit and Rule On HIS Throne. And HE Will Be A Priest On HIS Throne. And there will be harmony between the two.’

14The crown will be given to Heldai,f Tobijah, Jedaiah and Heng son of Zephaniah as a memorial in The Temple of The LORD.

15Those who are far away will come and help to build The Temple of The LORD, and you will know that The LORD ALMIGHTY Has Sent ME to you. This will happen if you diligently obey The LORD your GOD.”

Zechariah 6

Four Chariots

This vision may represent the ways of Providence in the government of this lower world. Whatever the Providences of GOD about us are, as to public or private affairs, we should see them all as coming from between the mountains of brass, the immoveable Counsels and Decrees of GOD.

HIS Providences Move swiftly and strongly as chariots, but all are directed and governed by HIS Infinite Wisdom and SOVEREIGN Will.

The red horses signify war and bloodshed. The black, signify the dismal consequences of war, famines, pestilences, and desolations. The white, signify the return of comfort, peace, and prosperity. The mixed color, signify events of different complexions, a day of prosperity and a day of adversity.

The angels go forth as messengers of GOD'S Counsels, and ministers of HIS Justice and Mercy. And the secret motions and impulses upon the spirits of men, by which the designs of Providence are carried on, are these four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from GOD, and fulfill what The GOD of the spirits of all flesh appoints. All the events which take place in the world spring from the unchangeable Counsels of The LORD, which are formed in HIS Unerring Wisdom, Perfect Justice, Truth, and Goodness.

The Branch

The prophet is taught to explain his own symbolic act. "Behold The MAN WHOSE Name Is The Branch". "Not for himself, but for CHRIST, WHOSE name Joshua bare, and whose Priesthood and Princedom he represented," was the crown given HIM. The prophet had already foretold The MESSIAH, under The Name of The Branch. Here he adds;

And HE Shall Grow Up out of HIS Place - Lowly and of no seeming account, as GOD foretold by Jeremiah,

"I Will Cause The Branch of Righteousness To Grow Up to David" Jeremiah 33:15

and JESUS HIMSELF Said, "Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abides alone; but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit" John 12:24

Alone HE Grew Up Before GOD, as a tender plant Isaiah 53:2, unknown of man, known to GOD. It is that still, Divine Life at Nazareth, of which we see only that one bright flash in The Temple, the deep saying, not understood even by Joseph and Mary, and then, "HE Went Down with them and Came to Nazareth and was subject to them" (see Luke 2:49-51).

And HE Shall Build the Temple of The LORD - The material Temple was soon to be finished, and that by Zerubbabel, to whom this had been promised, Zechariah 4:10, not by Joshua. It was then a New Temple, to be built from the foundation, of which HE HIMSELF Was to be "the foundation" Isaiah 28:161 Corinthians 3:11;Ephesians 2:20-21, As HE Said,

"On this rock I Will Build MY Church" Matthew 16:18; and in HIM "all the building, fitly framed together, grows to an Holy Temple to The LORD" Ephesians 2:21.

For "The MOST HIGH" Acts 7:48-49Stephen says, "Dwells Not in temples made with hands, as says the prophetHeaven is MY Throne and earth is MY Footstool; what house will you build ME, Says The LORD?

For if they could have built a House for GOD, HE Would Not Have Allowed HIS House to be burned and overthrown. What then Is The House of GOD which CHRIST Built? The Church which was founded on faith in HIM, dedicated by HIS Blood, wherein The LORD Ever Dwells.

But The MESSIAH, it was foretold, was to be both PRIEST and KING; "a priest after the order of Melchizedec Psalm 110:4, and a king, set by The LORD "upon HIS Holy Hill of Zion" Psalm 2:6. The act of placing the crown on the head of Joshua the high priest, pictured not only the union of the offices of Priest and King in the Person of CHRIST, but that HE Should Be King, being first our High Priest. Joshua was already high priest; being such, the kingly crown was added to him.

It says in act, what Paul says, "CHRIST JESUS, Being Found in fashion as a man, Humbled HIMSELF and Became obedient to death, even the Death of the Cross. Therefore GOD Also Has Highly Exalted HIM" Philippians 2:8-9.

The Flying Scroll And The Woman In A Basket

Zechariah 5:1-11 NIV

The Flying Scroll

1I looked again, and there before me was a flying scroll.

2He asked me, “What do you see?”

I answered, “I see a flying scroll, twenty cubits long and ten cubits wide.

3And he said to me,

“This is the curse that is going out over the whole land; for according to what it says on one side, every thief will be banished, and according to what it says on the other, everyone who swears falsely will be banished.

4The LORD ALMIGHTY Declares,

‘I Will Send it Out, and it will enter the house of the

thief and the house of anyone who swears falsely by

MY Name. It will remain in that house and destroy it

completely, both its timbers and its stones.’ ”

The Woman in a Basket

5Then the angel who was speaking to me came forward and said to me, “Look up and see what is appearing.”

6I asked, “What is it?”

He replied, “It is a basket.” And he added, “This is the iniquity of the people throughout the land.”

7Then the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman!

8He said, “This is wickedness,” and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed its lead cover down on it.

9Then I looked up—and there before me were two women, with the wind in their wings! They had wings like those of a stork, and they lifted up the basket between heaven and earth.

10“Where are they taking the basket?” I asked the angel who was speaking to me.

11He replied, “To the country of Babylonia to build a house for it. When the house is ready, the basket will be set there in its place.”

Thus far, all had been bright, full of the promise of the gifts of GOD; of GOD'S Favor to HIS people, the removal of their enemies, the restoration, the security of GOD'S people and Church under HIS Protection and the Promise of HIM, through whom there should be entire forgiveness and the abiding illumining of the Church by The SPIRIT of GOD.

Yet there is a reverse side to all this, GOD'S Judgments on those who reject all HIS mercies. Prophecies partly appertain to those in whose times the writers prophesied, partly to the mysteries of CHRIST. And therefore it is the custom of the prophets, at one time to chastise vices and set forth punishments, at another to predict the Mysteries of CHRIST and the Church.

And I turned and behold a roll flying - Ezekiel was shown "a hand with a roll of a book therein, and he spread it before me." Ezekiel's roll also was "written within and without, and there was written, therein lamentation and mourning and woe" Ezekiel 2:9-10. It was a wide unfolded roll, as is involved in its flying; but its flight signified the very swift coming of punishment and its flying from heaven signifies that the sentence came from the Judgment-Seat above.

5:1-4 The Scriptures of the Old and New Testament are rolls, in which GOD Has Written the great things of HIS Law and Gospel; they are flying rolls. GOD'S WORD Runs very swiftly, Psalm 147:15. This flying roll contains a declaration of the Righteous Wrath of GOD against sinners. Oh that we saw with an eye of faith the flying roll of GOD'S Curse hanging over the guilty world as a thick cloud, not only keeping off the sunbeams of GOD'S Favor, but big with thunders, lightning, and storms, ready to destroy them!

How welcome then would the Tidings of The SAVIOR'S be, WHO Came To Redeem us from the curse of the Law, Being HIMSELF Made a curse for us! Sin is the ruin of houses and families; especially the doing hurt to others. Who knows The Power of GOD'S Anger? GOD'S Curse cannot be kept out by bars or locks. All are transgressors of the Law, so we cannot escape this Wrath of GOD, except we flee for refuge to lay hold on the hope set before us in The Gospel of CHRIST.

5:5-11 In this vision the prophet sees an ephah, something in the shape of a corn measure. This represents the Jewish nation. They are filling the measure of their iniquity; and when it is full, they shall be delivered into the hands of those to whom GOD Sold them for their sins.

The woman sitting in the midst of the ephah represents the sinful church and nation of the Jews, in their latter and corrupt age. Guilt is upon the sinner as a weight of lead, to sink him to the lowest hell. This seems to mean the condemnation of the Jews, after they filled the measure of their iniquities by crucifying CHRIST and rejecting HIS Gospel.

Zechariah sees the ephah, with the woman thus pressed in it, carried away to some far country. This intimates that the Jews should be hurried out of their own land, and forced to dwell in far countries, as they had been in Babylon. There the ephah shall be firmly placed, and their sufferings shall continue far longer than in their late captivity. Blindness is happened to Israel, and they are settled upon their own unbelief.

Let sinners fear to treasure up wrath against the Day of GOD’S Judgment; for the more they multiply crimes, the faster the measure fills.

JEHOVAH Says, "Not By Might Nor By Power, But By MY SPIRIT"

 Zechariah 4:1-14 NIV

The Gold Lampstand and the Two Olive Trees

1Then the angel who talked with me returned and woke me up, like someone awakened from sleep.

2He asked me, “What do you see?”

I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven channels to the lamps. 3Also there are two olive trees by it, one on the right of the bowl and the other on its left.”

4I asked the angel who talked with me, “What are these, my lord?”

5He answered, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I replied.

6So he said to me,

“This Is The WORD of The LORD to Zerubbabel:

‘Not by might nor by power, but By MY SPIRIT,’

7“What are you, mighty mountain? Before Zerubbabel you will become level ground. Then he will bring out the capstone to shouts of

GOD Bless it! GOD Bless it!’ ”

8Then The WORD of The LORD Came to me:

9“The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this Temple; his hands will also complete it. Then you will know that The LORD ALMIGHTY Has Sent ME to you.

10“Who dares despise the day of small things, since the Seven Eyes of The LORD that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstonea in the hand of Zerubbabel?”

11Then I asked the angel, “What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?”

12Again I asked him, “What are these two olive branches beside the two gold pipes that pour out golden oil?”

13He replied, “Do you not know what these are?”

“No, my lord,” I said.

14So he said, “These are the two who are anointed to serve The LORD of all the earth.”

Zechariah 4

Zechariah saw a vision of a solid gold lampstand with seven lights with a bowl on top of it. On both sides are two olive trees. The mystery of vision is about the identities of the seven lights, the two olive trees. The central message of the vision to Israel through Zerubbabel is the popular wise saying,

'Not by might nor by power, but By MY SPIRIT.'

The vision mentioned Zerubbabel, the appointed governor of Judah under the Persian rule. During that time, Cyrus was the king of Persia. He conquered Babylon and freed the Jews from seventy years of captivity. Read Ezra 1:1-4. The Jews returned to Judah led by Zerubbabel and other elders (Ezra 2:1-3). Zerubbabel eventually became Judah's governor (Hag 1:1) and initiated the difficult task of rebuilding Jerusalem and the Holy Temple. The amazing part is, King Cyrus was also prophesied by Isaiah, about hundred and twenty years before he freed the Jews. Cyrus was not even born then and he was already identified by name by the prophet Isaiah as the liberator of the Jews and to rebuild Jerusalem! Read Isaiah 44:28; 45:1,13.

The central message is also telling Zerubbabel that the difficult task of rebuilding Jerusalem is only possible through faith in GOD. He met a lot of opposition to rebuild the Holy Temple and the walls of the city. Unlike King Solomon who was very wealthy and powerful, Zerubbabel had to start with practically nothing.

And yet it was GOD'S Power that he was able to accomplish GOD'S Plan purely by his faith. Zerubbabel was a governor and yet he did start the work by his own hands to inspire the people--'Men will rejoice when they see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.' Likewise, the message is for modern Israel not to rely on weapons or physical might but on GOD Alone. Today, there is so much dependence on military power for protection but the Bible says, this will fail. All nations that rely on might and power will fall.

But there will come a time that GOD Will Fight For HIS people and that will only happen in the last days when people will start to seek GOD. Therefore, GOD Also Emphasized to Zerubbabel, being the governor of Judah not to rebuild Judah to become a military power but simply a nation who fears GOD. They were given instruction by GOD that the golden days of King David and King Solomon are gone when they reigned supreme over all nations. Then, they became a subject of Persian rule, having no king of their own but under the direction of the Persian king.

Judah had to put their trust in GOD and not on their own power or might and they will be in Good Hands of GOD. Thus, started the rebirth of "Israel" that we know today. Israel of the modern age has her beginning with Zerubbabel with only the tribes of Judah, Benjamin and some Levites (Ezra 1:5). They do not represent the whole twelve tribes of Israel. Read also Israel, The Divided House. Israel, though only a tiny nation today being surrounded by her enemies only survives through GOD'S Protection.

Who are the two olive trees?

The rest of the vision concerns about the last days. The seven lights are already revealed to be the seven Eyes of The LORD (verse 10). The seven lights or lamps are also the seven SPIRITS of GOD (Revelation 4:5). The seven lights of the lampstand are being fueled by golden oil directly fed from the two olive trees through seven tubes or channels (verse 2). This is a very meaningful passage meant for the last days. Now, the angel said that the two olive trees are "...are the two who are anointed to serve The LORD of all the earth."

Who are the two anointed? Fast forward now to the Book of Revelation which reveals the two.

Revelation 11:3-6

And I Will Give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth." 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand Before The LORD of the earth. 5 If anyone tries to harm them, fire comes from their mouths and devours their enemies. This is how anyone who wants to harm them must die.

6 These men have power to shut up the sky so that it will not rain during the time they are prophesying; and they have power to turn the waters into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want.

During the tribulation proper or the 1,260 days reign of the Antichrist, GOD Will Send the Two Witnesses. As their title implies, they shall be witnesses or eyes for GOD and to bring testimony to all peoples, warn people of their sins and repent just as John the Baptist did. Who are these men who have great powers? Observe their abilities in verse 6 in the above passage.

There is only one person in the Bible who was given that power to shut up the sky so that it would not rain for years and he is Elijah (1 Ki 17:1). And indeed it never rained for a period of three years (1Ki 18:1).

Just as there was only one man in the Bible who was given the power to send plagues just as turning water into blood in full view of all people and he is Moses (Ex 7:19).
