Where Is Your Citizenship?

Philippians 3:1-21 NIV

No Confidence in the Flesh

1Further, my brothers and sisters, rejoice In The LORD! It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. 2Watch out for those dogs, those evildoers, those mutilators of the flesh. 3For it is we who are the circumcision, we who serve GOD By HIS SPIRIT, who boast In CHRIST JESUS, and who put no confidence in the flesh— 4though I myself have reasons for such confidence.

If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: 5circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the Law, a Pharisee; 6as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for righteousness based on the Law, faultless.

7But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the Sake of CHRIST. 8What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing CHRIST JESUS my LORD, for WHOSE Sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain CHRIST 9and be found in HIM, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the Law, but that which is through Faith Ina CHRIST—the Righteousness that comes From GOD on the basis of faith. 10I want to know CHRIST—yes, to know the Power of HIS Resurrection and participation in HIS Sufferings, becoming like HIM In HIS Death, 11and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.

12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which CHRIST JESUS Took Hold of me. 13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind  and straining toward what is ahead,

14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which GOD Has Called me heavenward in CHRIST JESUS.

Following Paul’s Example

15All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too GOD Will Make Clear To you. 16Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

17Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the Cross of CHRIST. 19Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things.

20But our citizenship is in heaven.

And we eagerly await a SAVIOR from there, The LORD JESUS CHRIST,

21WHO, By the Power that enables HIM

To Bring everything Under HIS Control,

Will Transform our lowly bodies so that

they will be like HIS GLORIOUS BODY.

Is Resurrection Body Real?

When you hear the phrase “raised from the dead”, what comes to mind? For those raised on a diet of silly Hollywood movies, the dead coming to life might be connected with rotting zombies wandering the streets in search of brains, or dusty mummies haunting hapless adventurers.
The Bible talks about the dead being raised to life Through CHRIST. As 1 Corinthians 6:14 says, “By His Power GOD Raised The LORD from the dead, and HE Will Raise us also.” We know that pop culture’s version of being raised from the dead is rubbish, but what exactly are resurrection bodies?

They are real

We know that JESUS Was Raised bodily, victorious over death. HE Has a real, solid Body that the disciples could touch (Luke 24:39).

HE Has a Body that can eat (Luke 24:42; John 21). So that means that, like JESUS, we will also be given real, solid bodies, able to participate in the great heavenly feast and able to sing praises to God (Matthew 8:11; Revelation 7:10).

They are recognizable

The disciples recognized the Risen JESUS as the man who had walked among them (John 21:7, 12). His Body Was Renewed, Made Imperishable, but it was still The JESUS they knew and loved.

They are renewed

Even though our bodies will be raised from death they won’t look like something out of a zombie movie! As Paul writes,

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a SAVIOR from there, the LORD JESUS CHRIST, WHO, by the Power that enables HIM To Bring everything under HIS control, Will Transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like HIS Glorious Body. (Philippians 3:20-21)

We will share in JESUS’ Glorification and our resurrection bodies will be whole and Just As God originally created them to be.
Elsewhere, Paul likens our earthly bodies to seeds (1 Corinthians 15:37-44). A seed is an indication of what’s to come; it isn’t the final version of whatever it is you’re planting. The ‘seeds’ of our earthly bodies are perishable, dishonorable, weak and natural. The renewed bodies that GOD  Will Raise from these seeds will be imperishable, glorious, powerful and spiritual.

They won’t be touched by sin

The reason we have so much trouble with our bodies at the moment is because of sin. Sin causes the decay and eventual death of our earthly bodies (Genesis 3:19). But, in the new creation, sin won’t be able to affect our renewed bodies at all. Resurrection bodies won’t wear out, they won’t need bits replaced, and they won’t die (Revelation 21:4). It’s a wonderful thing to look forward to.

A warning

But, as John Piper says, we must be careful not to idolize this thought of a new body. It’s not wrong to want the pain and decay of our current physical state to end; in fact all of creation is groaning with longing for things to be put right, for everything to be made new (Romans 8:22-23). But our goal in persevering and longing For CHRIST To Come Back is not solely so that we’ll be rewarded with buff, gorgeous physiques. The body is meant to glorify GOD now and the body will glorify GOD in the world to come (1 Corinthians 6:13).

With our resurrection bodies we will experience the height of fulfillment, pleasure and satisfaction because we will be with GOD (Revelation 21:3)! We will be able to see GOD’s Face, something that is impossible in our present weak state (Revelation 22:4). We can rejoice and look forward to the day we receive our resurrection bodies because, to quote Piper again,

You are going to be using your bodies to obey GOD and praise HIS Great and Wonderful Name. GOD Will Be at the center of your life, and that is why you will never be sad again.
